How to air charge a waterlogged pressure tank?
How often do you see those waterlogged pressure tanks at gas stations? They look pretty useless, don’t they? Well, you might want to check out this video where the owner shows us how he air charged his tank.
If you’re looking for a way to get rid of water from your pressure tank, then you should consider using an air compressor. This method is called air charging and it involves pumping air into the tank until the water level drops below the bottom of the tank.
Air charging is a simple technique that anyone can perform. All you need is a pressure tank, some compressed air, and a hose. The only downside is that you need to wait for several hours before you start seeing results.
How Do You Fix a Waterlogged Pressure Tank?
The first thing you need to do when you notice that your pressure tank has water in it is to drain the tank completely. If there are any leaks or holes in the tank, then you will have to fix them immediately so that you won’t be able to pump more water into the tank.
Once you’ve drained all the water from the tank, you should make sure that the tank is dry by running a garden hose through it.
Next, you need to remove the valve cap on the top of the tank. Then, you need to open up the valve and let the air escape. After that, you need to close the valve again and put the cap back on the tank. Finally, you need to connect the hose to the tank and turn on the air compressor.
How to Air Charge an Air-Over-water Pressure Tank
After turning on the air compressor, you need to hold down the trigger button while slowly releasing the handle. Once you release the trigger, you need to keep holding down the trigger button until you hear the air compressor stop.
You need to repeat this process until the water level in the tank decreases to about half its original height. It usually takes around 30 minutes to fill up a 20-gallon tank with air. However, if you use a larger tank, then it could take longer.
Turn off the Well Pump
When you finish filling up the tank with air, you need to shut off the well pump. When you turn off the well pump, it means that the air inside the tank will begin to expand.
As soon as you turn off the well pumps, you need to disconnect the hose from the tank. Don’t forget to turn off the air compressor as well.
By-Pass Filtering Equipment
Now that you’ve turned off the well pump and disconnected the hose, you need to go ahead and replace the filter on the well pump. Make sure that you clean the screen on the well pump after replacing the filter.
After cleaning the screen, you need to attach the new filter to the well pump. Next, you need to reconnect the hose to the well pump.
Finally, you need to turn on the well pump and test it to ensure that it works properly.
Drain the Tank
If you want to see how much water you removed from the tank, then you need to drain the tank completely again. To drain the tank, you need to run a garden hose through it one last time.
Then, you need to turn off the well pump and disconnect the hose from the well pump. Now, you can store the tank somewhere safe until you need to refill it.
Recharge the Tank
To recharge the tank, you need the same tools that you used to charge it. First, you need to turn the well pump back on. Second, you need to connect a hose to the well pump and turn on the air compressors.
The next step is to hold down the trigger for 10 seconds before letting go. This will allow the air inside the tank to expand.
You need to continue doing this until the water level in your tank reaches about half of its original height. If you don’t do this, then the air inside the tank won’t be able to expand enough to expel the water out of the tank.
Once the tank has been filled with air, you need turn off the well pump again. You also need to disconnect the hose once more.
How to Air Charge a Bladder/Diaphragm Pressure Tank
Air charging a bladder or diaphragm pressure tank is similar to air charging a pressure tank. The only difference between these two types of tanks is that they have different valves.
In order to air charge a bladder or diaphram pressure tank, you first need to open the valve located at the bottom of the tank. Then, you need to close the valve located near the top of the tank.
Next, you need to start the air compressor. While the air compressor is running, you need to keep holding down the trigger for 10 to 15 seconds.
This will help the air inside the tank expand. Once the air expands, you need to release the trigger so that the air can escape from the tank.
Next, you need to remove the hose from the tank and let the air inside the tank contract. After removing the hose, you need wait a few minutes before refilling the tank.
Air charging a pressure tank is an important part of maintaining a well. It allows you to get rid of any unwanted water that may accumulate in the tank.
However, if you fail to air charge your tank, then you could end up having problems when using the well. For instance, you could experience low water pressure in the house.
Also, you might not be able to use the well for irrigation purposes. In addition, you could even find yourself without water if you forget to air charge your tank.
